Autodesk Shines at SPAR International 2014

Last week, Autodesk made a strong appearance at the SPAR International conference in Colorado Springs, showcasing its innovative reality capture solution, Autodesk ReCap. Over the past few years, the laser scanning, measurement, and mapping industry has seen a wave of new technologies that have made these tools more user-friendly, cost-effective, and accessible across various industries. Autodesk ReCap empowers users to capture real-world data and integrate it directly into their design workflows. By enabling point clouds and image-based 3D models to be used within Autodesk’s design and creation suites, ReCap streamlines the process of incorporating real-world conditions into digital projects. This was clearly demonstrated at the Autodesk booth through several presentations highlighting how ReCap is being used in factory design, construction, and beyond. At the event, Mike Jolicoeur showcased how companies like Dearborn Midwest have enhanced their factory design and renovation processes using laser scanning and ReCap. The result? Increased productivity and reduced costs. Attendees were impressed by the practical applications and real-world benefits of the technology. Autodesk ReCap received high praise from show attendees, even earning the “Best in Show” award from the CAD blog TenLinks. Roopinder Tara, founder of TenLinks, said, “I was impressed with what I saw from Autodesk while at SPAR in Colorado. ReCap brings 3D modeling of the existing world to a whole new level of accessibility and affordability. Even small firms and individuals can now model the real world—from single objects to entire landscapes—which can then be used for information, modification, or as the basis for new designs.” Robert Shear, senior director of Reality Solutions at Autodesk, accepted the “Best in Show” award on behalf of the team. The event also featured a collaboration with 3D Robotics, where they demonstrated the IRIS UAV at the stunning Garden of the Gods. Attendees watched as the IRIS performed two missions—first manually controlled, then autonomously. Equipped with a GoPro camera, the drone captured over 100 images, which were later processed using Autodesk’s Photo on ReCap 360 web service to create a detailed phototextured 3D mesh. This model could then be used in various Autodesk software for visualization and engineering purposes. Throughout the event, Autodesk introduced the concept of Reality Computing—a revolutionary approach that bridges the gap between the digital and physical worlds. It involves capturing real-world conditions, analyzing and manipulating the data, and applying the results back into the physical environment. Elmer Bol, director of product management for Autodesk Reality Solutions, explained, “Reality Computing and Autodesk ReCap are changing how we think about and work with captured 3D data. It's not just about visualizing point clouds—it's about extracting value and meaning from reality data to improve design efficiency, construction confidence, and understanding of the physical world without being there.” Dr. Aaron Morris presented on the topic during his talk titled “Turning Things Into Data, Data Into Things, and What Happens In Between,” offering deep insights into the future of reality computing. Overall, the event highlighted Autodesk’s commitment to making advanced technologies more accessible, efficient, and impactful for professionals across industries.
