Last week, Autodesk made a strong appearance at the SPAR International conference in Colorado Springs, where it showcased its innovative reality capture solution, Autodesk ReCap. Over the past few years, the laser scanning, measurement, and mapping industry has seen a wave of new technologies that have made these tools more user-friendly, cost-effective, and accessible across various industries.
Autodesk ReCap empowers users to seamlessly integrate real-world data into their design workflows. Whether it's point clouds or image-based 3D models, ReCap allows for smooth integration with Autodesk’s design and creation software. At the SPAR event, this was clearly demonstrated through a series of presentations at the Autodesk booth, highlighting how ReCap is transforming factory design, construction, and other sectors.

Roopinder Tara, founder of TenLinks, said, “I was impressed with what I saw from Autodesk while at SPAR in Colorado. Autodesk brings 3D modeling of the existing world to a whole new level of accessibility and affordability with Recap. Even small firms and individuals can use Recap to model the real world, from single objects to entire landscapes, which can then be used for information, modification, or the basis for new designs.â€

In addition to showcasing ReCap, Autodesk partnered with 3D Robotics to demonstrate the IRIS UAV at the scenic Garden of the Gods. Attendees witnessed two missions: one manually controlled and another autonomous. The IRIS can fly up to 250 feet high and last for 15 minutes per flight. Equipped with a GoPro camera, it captured over 100 images, which were then uploaded to Autodesk’s Photo on ReCap 360 web service to generate a detailed phototextured 3D mesh. This model could then be used in various Autodesk software for visualization or engineering purposes.

Autodesk also introduced the concept of Reality Computing to attendees, emphasizing how it bridges the gap between the physical and digital worlds. This emerging approach combines products and technologies to digitally **capture** existing conditions, **manipulate and analyze** the data, and **realize** the results back in the physical world.
“Reality Computing and Autodesk ReCap are changing how we think about and work with captured 3D data,†said Elmer Bol, director of product management for the Autodesk Reality Solutions group. “It’s not enough to just visualize point clouds – it’s about extracting value and meaning from Reality Data leading to better design efficiency, confidence during construction, and trust in understanding the physical world without physically being there.â€
