The Barrington Courier-Review recently reported that as the year-end separation between the Barrington Fire Department and the Barrington Countryside Fire Protection District approaches, a mutual-aid agreement remains unresolved. With less than two weeks until both entities begin operating independently, negotiations have yet to produce a formal deal.
The Village of Barrington had aimed to finalize an agreement by its December 16 meeting, but the topic was not included on the agenda. Barrington Fire Chief James Arie stated that the village has submitted proposals, but no response has been received from district officials. These agreements are meant to outline support plans for emergencies across jurisdictional lines. In the meantime, the village has already secured automatic aid arrangements with departments in Lake Zurich, Long Grove, and Palatine, while continuing talks with other local agencies.
“We have resources around us that are ready to respond to our needs every day,†Arie said, adding that firefighters are eager to start independent operations on January 1.
Meanwhile, the Barrington Countryside Fire Protection District took a step forward by finalizing an automatic aid agreement with the Palatine Rural Fire Protection District. The deal, approved on December 16, ensures residents continue to receive high-quality fire and emergency medical services.
Under the agreement, the Countryside District will provide a fire engine or water tanker for all structure fires within Palatine Rural’s area. In return, Palatine Rural will send an Advanced Life Support engine for calls south of Lake-Cook Road and offer initial fire and paramedic response for calls on the eastern edge of the district.
District Fire Chief Jeff Swanson emphasized that the agreement was developed with the goal of supporting each other's missions. “Our focus was on ensuring any agreement helps us deliver excellence in service,†he said. “We’re confident in this arrangement and plan to review it regularly.â€
The agreement is set to take effect on January 1 and will be formally approved by the Palatine Rural Board later this month.
“This agreement took a bit longer than expected, but it guarantees our residents will continue to receive top-tier fire and emergency medical services,†said Palatine Rural Fire Chief Hank Clemmensen.
In addition to the new mutual-aid deal, the Barrington Countryside Fire Protection District also approved the purchase of a new 3,000-gallon water tanker. Officials say the vehicle will significantly improve the district’s ability to supply water to areas without hydrants.
“We were lucky to find a ready-made unit that met our needs,†said district official Rowan. “It saved us eight months of waiting.†The $205,000 truck, manufactured by Minnesota-based Luverne, arrived at district headquarters in mid-December.
