Cross-strait shipping into a global shipping market highlights

It was learned from the Ministry of Transport that in the first half of 2013, the cross-strait shipping volume of the Taiwan Strait completed 30.60 million tons, up 0.7% year-on-year, of which container transportation volume was 978,000 TEUs, up 13.5% year-on-year; passenger traffic was 735,000, down year-on-year. 11.0%, of which 850,000 passengers from mainland China to Taiwan's main island, up 8.6% year-on-year.

In June 2013, the cargo volume was 5.74 million tons, of which container transportation volume was 207,000 TEU; passenger traffic was 116,000.

In terms of passenger transport, due to factors such as the decrease in the number of delegations to Taiwan, the amount of passenger traffic between the two sides of the strait has declined from the same period of last year and the chain has been decreasing since April.

In terms of freight transportation, the total freight volume increased slightly, and the growth of different types of goods varied. Affected by the sharp increase in cross-strait trade volume and the optimization of freight structure, the volume of container and liquid chemicals showed a significant increase, up 13.5% and 24.3% respectively. The volume of ordinary dry bulk and liquefied gas fell, down by 7.8% and 4.8% respectively.

Under the influence of the Ministry of Transport's macro-control policies, the average actual load rate of container ships on both sides of the strait has increased from less than 60% at the beginning of the year to nearly 70% at present. The actual load rate of typical routes from Shanghai to Taiwan has reached 78%, compared with the previous year. In the same period, it increased by nearly 10 percentage points.

In the first half of the year, the prices of containers and bulk cargo on both sides of the strait were generally stable, and the price of liquid chemicals was steadily rising. The cross-strait transportation business continued to maintain a low profit. Under the circumstance that the global shipping situation continues to be sluggish, the cross-strait shipping market has developed steadily and has become a bright spot in the global shipping market.
