Eastman Chemical Company announced on the 13th that it will expand Tritan-brand specialty copolyesters production capacity at the Kingsport, Tennessee, USA facility. The company stated that the expansion of Tritan brand products includes the construction of new factory buildings and the retrofitting of existing installations, which will be completed by the end of 2009 at the latest.
The vice president of the Eastman Specialty Plastics Business Unit stated that Tritan brand products have been accepted by the market. The company expects that the global demand for copolyesters including Tritan brand products will increase at an average annual rate of 6% to 8% in the next few years. The new expansion project will enable Tritan-brand products to significantly increase their production capacity to meet market demand.
Tritan brand special copolyester is a new generation of copolyester product launched by the company at the K show in Germany last October. This innovative material produced using new technology has improved the transparency and chemical resistance of the copolyesters, and has higher heat resistance, flexibility, and ease of processing. The product can be widely used in home appliances, plates and other fields. According to industry sources, the product can be compared with polycarbonate when used in certain fields, and its density is lower than that of polycarbonate.
As a leading supplier of polyester production, Eastman is stepping up its pace toward high value-added polyester business. In addition to Tritan brand specialty copolyesters, the company will also convert 220 million pounds of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) capacity into copolyesters by 2010. At the same time, the company has sold most of its PET business outside the United States and plans to reduce North American PET production by about 500 million pounds in 2012.
