Interdivisional Box Alarm in the Tri-State Fire Protection District

Excerpts from abc7chicago.com: Investigators have confirmed that a gasoline leak into the water system caused a massive explosion and fire at a condominium complex in south suburban Willowbrook. The incident occurred on Friday morning at the Knolls Condominiums, located on Knoll Wood Road in the 6100 block. Firefighters from at least 10 different departments rushed to the scene to tackle the blaze. According to officials from the Tri-State Fire Protection District, the gasoline leak is believed to have originated at a Speedway gas station in nearby Westmont. A significant amount of gasoline is still flowing through the sewers from Westmont to a water reclamation plant eight miles east. Authorities are working to flush out the water system and open the sewers to release the dangerous fumes. So far, 10 explosions have been reported due to the gasoline leak, but no serious injuries have been confirmed. A resident managed to pull a woman out of the building as police and firefighters arrived. She was taken to Loyola Hospital for treatment and is expected to recover. No other injuries were reported. Willowbrook Fire Chief Robert Pavelchik stated that the fire department has determined that either gasoline or another flammable chemical entered the sanitary system. The Environmental Protection Agency and local sanitation authorities have been notified. Residents in the area are advised to open windows and doors if they detect the smell of gasoline, turn off all ignition sources, and call 911. However, people are allowed to use their appliances. At the condo building, all electric and gas ignition sources were immediately shut off, and residents were evacuated. The first reports of gas smells came on Thursday night, with some residents saying they could not sleep due to the strong odor in their homes. Christopher Simmons, a resident, shared his experience: “We had to sleep in our front room because the master bedroom bathroom smelled like gas. I smelled gas all night.” He also criticized the response from officials the previous night, saying they only turned off the alarm and left. Pavelchik acknowledged the concerns, stating, “They couldn’t find the source, and here we are again this morning.” The American Red Cross has been contacted to assist those who have been evacuated, and residents will not be allowed to return until the source of the explosion is identified and resolved. In addition to the main incident, firefighters responded to a separate fire on Friday afternoon in the 300 block of 63rd Street. They successfully rescued a dog from the smoky house, and no one was injured. Thanks, Scott.
