Stanford Research Team: High density, ultra-sensitive electronic skin is expected to be mass-produced

    Humans can experience this world in many ways, including sight, hearing, smell, taste, and touch. Our sense of touch can help us to feel the warmth of temperature, the softness and hardness of objects, and the beauty of the world.

    But for those who wear artificial limbs, they lose such ability. Prof. Bao Zhenan from Stanford University has led the team for many years to develop "tactile" "artificial skin."

    This "artificial skin" is actually a unique electronic component that is made of sensitive electronic materials that can be stretched to sense the current changes caused by tiny pressures.

    The team achieved two technological breakthroughs in R&D. One is to create a retractable polymer circuit that uses an integrated tactile sensor to detect the weak footprint of an artificial bug. The second is a more practical development, finding a way to mass produce this new flexible, scalable electronic component, which also paves the way for commercialization.

    This element has good flexibility and can be stretched to twice its original size while maintaining its ability to conduct electricity without cracks, delaminations or wrinkles. To test durability, the team performed more than 1,000 stretches of the sample without causing significant damage or reduced sensitivity. When researchers attach their samples to the irregular surface of human hands, the effect is still very good.

    In the future, the surface of the prosthesis may be covered by this kind of flexible electronic material, but before that, this technology may bring us new flexible electronic devices and bring revolutionary changes to the existing rigid electronic devices. .
