Surge protection device, also called lightning protection device, is an electronic device that provides security protection for various electronic devices, instrumentation, and communication lines. When a sudden current or voltage suddenly occurs in an electrical circuit or a communication line due to external interference, the surge protector can conduct the shunt in a very short time, thereby avoiding damage to the other devices in the circuit by the surge.

Lightning discharges may occur between clouds or within clouds, or between clouds and the earth; in addition to many internal surges caused by the use of large-capacity electrical equipment, power supply systems (China's low-voltage power supply system standard: AC50Hz220/380V) and electricity The influence of equipment and the protection of lightning protection and surge protection have become the focus of attention.

Lightning strikes between the clouds and the earth consist of one or several separate lightnings. Each lightning carries several high-amplitude currents with very short duration. A typical lightning discharge will include two or three lightnings, each about one-tenth of a second in time. Most lightning currents fall in the range of 10,000 to 100,000 amps, and their duration is generally less than 100 microseconds.

The use of large-capacity equipment and frequency conversion equipment inside the power supply system has brought about increasingly serious internal surges. We attributed it to the effects of transient over-voltage (TVS). There is an allowable range of power supply voltage for any powered device. Sometimes even a very narrow overvoltage surge can cause the power supply or all damage to the device. This is the case with transient overvoltage (TVS) destruction. Especially for sensitive microelectronic devices, sometimes a small surge may cause fatal damage.
