Historic 5-11 Alarm fire with multiple LODD in Chicago, 2-7-68

From Steve Redick: Hi everyone, I just wanted to share something that has been on my mind. It's about an event I've heard stories about from my dad. Back in February 1968, there was a massive fire at Mickelberry Food Products on 801 W. 49th Place in Chicago. Apparently, a gasoline tanker had leaked and caught fire in the alley behind the building. This led to an enormous explosion that tragically took the lives of four firefighters and several civilians. My dad was part of SS3, and he responded to the scene. He told me about how difficult it was for them to navigate the area after the explosion. He described wading through waist-deep water that was completely saturated with gasoline while trying to shut off utilities as instructed. He often mentioned how dangerous it was for them to even be down there, especially given the circumstances. They didn't arrive until much later in the firefight, which made the situation even more perilous. Thankfully, despite the chaos, no one else was injured during their operations. Dad always emphasized that they were incredibly fortunate not to have suffered any further losses.
