One more tragic story to share. It happened back in 1968 when a gasoline tanker leaked and caught fire in the narrow alley behind 801 W. 49th Place, near Mickelberry Food Products. The situation quickly spiraled out of control, leading to an enormous explosion that took the lives of four firefighters and several civilians. My dad was part of SS3, and he responded to the scene later in the firefight. He recounted how they had to wade through waist-deep water that was completely drenched in gasoline while trying to shut off utilities in the basement, following orders. He always mentioned how incredibly lucky they were that no one else got injured during their efforts. Looking back, he admitted that they shouldn't have been down there in the first place. This all happened long after the initial blast. They arrived late into the chaos of the fire. You can hear the audio recording here. Steve

It's hard to look at these photos without feeling the weight of history pressing down on you. The destruction here is immense, and it's humbling to think about the bravery of those who risked their lives to try and contain such a catastrophic event. These images remind us just how dangerous firefighting work was back then, even with today's advancements, it's still not without its risks.
