Rolls - Royce has introduced a new azimuth thruster that uses permanent magnet technology to expand the company's range of marine propulsion products.
The permanent magnet azimuth thruster consists of three main assemblies, including a permanent magnet motor / propeller / underwater nozzle device, a hull mounting system, and an inboard power unit. The permanent magnet motor consists of two main components: a stator with various motor coil windings and a rotor equipped with a strong permanent magnet. In the recently completed series of sea trials, propellers using two permanent magnet technologies have an efficiency of up to 13% compared to diesel-electric systems . The sea trial was conducted on the RVGunnerus research ship at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology .
Permanent magnet azimuth thrusters have greater power, less noise and vibration at the same diameter of the propeller, and do not require access to the dry dock for maintenance.
