Wärtsilä Shipyard Gas Supply System achieves a major milestone in the 100th order

    On May 22, Wärtsilä's gas supply systems division achieved a major milestone for the 100th order. The two new shuttle tankers built for Singapore's AET Tankers feature Wärtsilä 34DF dual fuel auxiliary engines that operate primarily on LNG gas and are equipped with LNGPac units. This contract brings the total number of orders received by the innovation system to 100.

    The Wärtsilä LNGPac was first introduced in 2009 and played a major role in establishing the feasibility of liquefied natural gas (LNG) as a marine fuel. The system consists of a fuel filling station, LNG fuel tanks, associated process equipment, and a control and monitoring system. The LNGPac fuel system can be used as a stand-alone product or as part of a complete propulsion system.

    Mathias Jansson, general manager of the Wärtsilä Shipyard Gas Supply System, said: “One of the main reasons for the global acceptance of LNG as a marine fuel is that Wärtsilä realized early on that it might be more than just a dual fuel engine and a standalone LNG system. LNG as a fuel vessel requires a complete fuel processing system, and the innovative LNGPac system has successfully met this requirement."

    The first LNGPac unit was used by the Swedish operator Tarbit's “Bit Viking” chemical carrier. The vessel's transition to LNG fuel operation in 2011 has paved the way for a quick acceptance of Wärtsilä's solution. LNGPac is now installed in at least 12 different vessel types, including passenger ships, tugs, dredgers and offshore vessels. Wärtsilä is able to provide LNG systems for propulsion and power generation for any suitable ship or engine type.

    Since the first introduction of LNGPac, Wärtsilä has continued to develop this system. For example, pioneering the use of cold energy stored in LNG to cool onboard HVAC and onboard kitchen systems. Another initiative was the development of a compact LNGPac with integrated gas valve (GVU) and airlock. A tank inline space has also been developed for single-cylinder tanks, as is the case with dedicated LNG fuel pumps based on proven deep well pump technology. As the marine industry enters a new era of connectivity and digitalization, Wärtsilä is actively developing more intelligent functions for LNGPac, such as gas capacity measurement and real-time gas quality measurement.

    The LNGPac system can be customized to meet the needs of each project. Special designs are designed at the start of the project to match specific operational requirements, safety and classification society requirements. Its innovative features make LNGPac a market leader in gas supply systems. Wärtsilä offers optimized maintenance protocols, including condition monitoring (CBM) for LNGPac systems.
