The largest domestic aniline plant was designed
On December 5th, Ningbo Wanhua Polyurethane Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of Yantai Wanhua Polyurethane Co., Ltd., officially signed engineering design contracts with the Second Design Institute of Chemical Industry for the nitrobenzene, aniline, and nitric acid projects. This milestone marks the official start of the construction of Ningbo Wanhua's 360,000 tons per year aniline plant.
According to reports, the new aniline facility will utilize the world’s most advanced adiabatic nitration process. Compared to traditional isothermal nitration methods, this technology offers enhanced safety, a more compact design, lower energy consumption, stable operation, easier control, and longer online time. The Second Design Institute previously implemented a similar process in a 150,000-ton-per-year aniline plant developed by Tianji Group, which was successfully launched in September 2005. At that time, it was the largest operational unit of its kind in China.
The upcoming joint project between the Second Design Institute and Ningbo Wanhua is expected to become the largest aniline production facility in the country. Aniline is a critical raw material in the production of MDI (methylene diphenyl diisocyanate), with approximately 80% of global aniline usage directed toward this purpose.
With the completion of the reconstruction of the Ningbo Wanhua MDI plant and the second phase of the MDI expansion, combined with the existing Yantai Wanhua MDI facility, the total annual production capacity will reach 600,000 tons. This will result in an annual demand for 460,000 tons of aniline. The new aniline plant will significantly alleviate the pressure on raw material supply for MDI production, ensuring a more stable and efficient manufacturing process.
The signing ceremony was attended by key representatives from both companies, highlighting the importance of this strategic partnership. The event marked a significant step forward in the development of China's chemical industry.
