Trade Fairs, Foreign Wars, Foreign Capital Giants Digging Gold Car Aftermarket

At the 55th National Auto Parts Trade Fair, held from May 16 to 18 at the Changchun International Convention and Exhibition Center, the term "auto aftermarket" was frequently discussed by exhibitors and industry experts. The auto aftermarket refers to the service sector that supports car owners after a vehicle has been purchased, covering everything from maintenance and repairs to parts supply and enhancements. This year’s event attracted major players in the automotive services field, including well-known names like Mei Huai Huang Auto Fast Insurance Chain Center, Champion Oil from the U.S., and Wilton Petrochemical from Singapore. All are eyeing the growing potential of the Changchun auto aftermarket. According to industry data, in overseas markets, accessories account for 39% of sales, manufacturing 21%, retail 7%, and services 33%. In China, the numbers are slightly different: accessories make up 37%, manufacturing 43%, retail 8%, and services just 12%. This highlights a trend of "heavy manufacturing and light service," with the after-sales service segment still underdeveloped. Experts estimate there is nearly a 10% gap to close in terms of service quality and scale. As a result, the market is still in its early stages. A representative from a Singapore-based company noted that the auto service market is moving toward diversification and standardization. Relying on a single service offering is no longer sufficient to meet evolving customer demands. Industry projections suggest that by 2005, the output value of the automotive industry alone could reach 42 billion yuan, while the maintenance sector could hit 40 billion yuan. Currently, most companies in the market are small workshops with limited service offerings. While this presents challenges, it also creates opportunities for growth. With foreign auto service providers entering the Chinese market, competition is expected to intensify. This will likely push domestic companies to improve their standards and expand their operations. At the conference, experts emphasized that the auto aftermarket is gradually shifting from a supporting role to a central one. Previously, it was often overshadowed by整车 (new vehicle) sales, but as the market expands, the focus is beginning to change. The future of the automotive industry will be heavily influenced by the development of the aftermarket. Experts also highlighted the need for China to learn from developed countries like the U.S. while avoiding direct imitation. The key lies in developing a modern service mindset that aligns with today’s consumer expectations. As technology advances and customer awareness grows, three major trends are emerging: brand management, a shift from repair to maintenance, and increased integration of technology in service delivery. In the coming years, the auto aftermarket is expected to become a critical part of the automotive industry, potentially capturing 70% of the market share. Companies like Zhongnan Automobile Port Development Co., Ltd. are already preparing for this shift. They plan to launch a massive exhibition and sales area in 2006, featuring used cars, auto parts, and vehicle displays. With the increasing competition and technological innovation, both domestic and international players are actively exploring new opportunities. As the market matures, the auto aftermarket is set to become a key driver of growth in the automotive sector.
