Various handles and basic operations of horizontal lathes

1. Adjustment and Use of the Handle on a Horizontal Lathe

Adjusting the C6132 lathe involves moving various handles to different positions, as illustrated in Figure 6-7. This process is essential for setting up the machine for different operations and ensuring smooth functioning.

2. Basic Operation of a Horizontal Lathe

(1) Practice in Parking (Set Spindle Reversal and Stop Handle 13 to the Stop Position)

1) Correctly adjust the spindle speed. By manipulating the shift handles 1, 2, or 6 located on the outside of the gearbox and headstock, you can achieve different spindle speeds. If the handle feels stiff, gently turn the chuck with your hand to ease the movement.

2) Properly change the feed rate. Refer to the label on the feed box based on the desired feed amount, then adjust the positions of handles 3 and 4 accordingly. This ensures the correct feed rate is selected.

3) Learn the rotation direction of the vertical and horizontal manual feed handles. Hold the longitudinal feed manual handwheel 17 with your left hand and the lateral feed manual handle 7 with your right hand. Rotate the handwheel clockwise or counterclockwise to control the movement of the carriage and cross slide.

4) Become familiar with the longitudinal or lateral operation. When the light bar or screw-on handle 18 is in the light bar position, lifting the longitudinal motorized feed handle 16 allows for longitudinal feeding. Similarly, lifting the transverse motorized feed handle 15 enables horizontal feeding. Lowering these handles stops the movement.

5) Tailstock operation. The tailstock can be manually moved and locked using bolts and nuts. Turning the tailstock sleeve moving handwheel 12 allows the sleeve to move within the tailstock. Once the desired position is reached, turn the tailstock locking handle 11 to secure it in place.

(2) Before practicing low-speed operation, make sure all handles are in the correct positions and perform the driving practice carefully.

1) Start the spindle – start the motor – spindle rotates – spindle stops – motor turns off.

2) Motorized feed – start the motor – spindle rotates – manual vertical feed – motorized vertical feed – manual retraction – transverse feed – manual retraction – stop the spindle – turn off the motor.

Notes:

1) Never change the spindle speed while the machine is still running. Doing so may cause severe noise from the spindle gear box or even lead to a machine malfunction. Always check the handle positions before starting the machine.

2) Avoid incorrect movement of the vertical and horizontal handles. Be especially cautious with rapid advance and retreat, as improper use can damage the workpiece or cause safety issues.

3) When using the horizontal feed manual handle for one grid, the tool advances 0.02 mm horizontally, which results in a cutting depth of 0.04 mm on the diameter of the workpiece.
