The Ball Grinding Mill is a highly efficient equipment designed to grind various materials into fine powder. It is commonly used for processing materials that are 1/4 inch or smaller, achieving particle sizes ranging from 20 to 75 microns. For optimal performance in cement grinding, the process typically occurs in a closed system, where oversized material is continuously recirculated into the cylindrical drum for further reduction. Classifiers such as screens, spiral classifiers, cyclones, and air classifiers are often used to separate and classify the ground material after it exits the ball mill.
Features of Ball Grinding Mill
1) The ball mill is an effective tool for grinding different types of materials into fine powder.
2) Two grinding methods are available: dry grinding and wet grinding.
3) Depending on the discharge type, the ball mill can be either a grate-type or overflow-type.
4) The longer the ball mill operates, the finer the resulting powder will be.
Working Principle of Ball Grinding Mill
The wet ball mill consists of a horizontally mounted rotating cylinder driven by an external gear. A quill shaft ensures even distribution of the material into the grinding chamber. The chamber is equipped with steel balls of varying specifications, including ladder-shaped and ripple-shaped designs.
As the cylinder rotates, centrifugal forces lift the balls to a certain height before they fall back down, crushing the material. This continuous motion results in the grinding of the material, which is then discharged once it meets the required specifications. The rotation speed typically ranges between 4 to 20 revolutions per minute, depending on the mill’s diameter. Larger mills operate at slower speeds to ensure effective grinding. If the peripheral speed becomes too high, the mill may start acting like a centrifuge, preventing the balls from falling back and reducing efficiency. The point at which this occurs is known as the "Critical Speed," and ball mills usually operate at 65% to 75% of this speed.
