Features of Ball Grinding Mill 1. The ball mill is an effective tool for grinding different types of materials into fine powder. 2. Two grinding methods can be applied: dry grinding and wet grinding. 3. Small ball mills can be designed as either grinders or overflow type depending on the discharge method. 4. The longer the mill runs, the finer the resulting powder becomes. Working Principle of Ball Grinding Mill The wet ball mill consists of a horizontally mounted rotating cylinder controlled by an outer gearwheel. A quill shaft ensures even distribution of the material into the grinding chamber. The chamber contains various sizes of steel balls, such as ladder-type and ripple-type. As the cylinder rotates, centrifugal forces lift the balls to a certain height before they fall back, crushing the material. This continuous process results in finely ground material being discharged from the mill.

Rotation of the horizontal cylinder generates centrifugal forces that elevate the balls, allowing them to fall and crush the material. The rotation speed typically ranges between 4 to 20 revolutions per minute, depending on the mill's diameter. Larger mills rotate more slowly to maintain efficiency. If the peripheral speed is too high, the balls may remain at the edge of the cylinder, acting like a centrifuge. This critical point is known as the "Critical Speed," and ball mills usually operate at 65% to 75% of this speed for optimal performance.

In the ball mill, the motor and speed reducer transmit torque to the large and small gears, which rotate the barrel. As the barrel turns, the steel balls inside are lifted to a certain height and then drop to collide with the material, effectively grinding it. The grinding media mix continuously, ensuring consistent and efficient processing. Once the material meets the desired specifications, it is discharged through the outlet.
