The Maywood Fire Department was called to a four-story vacant building around 9 AM this morning, where contractors were renovating the structure. Initial reports suggest an accident involving a torch near the cockloft of one of the five buildings in the complex. Shortly after arriving on scene, a second alarm was requested and the fire quickly escalated to a third alarm. The building was made of brick with concrete floors, and the fire spread through the attic space, burning off much of the roof before it collapsed in sections.
Aerial master streams from Maywood and Melrose Park, along with a ground hand line, were deployed to tackle the fire on the east side of the building. Firefighters from Maywood used their aerial ladder (Truck 502) to access the cockloft, while others worked from the ground. Smoke was visible rising from the roof, and firefighters were seen working aggressively to contain the blaze.
Multiple agencies responded to the incident, including mutual aid from Melrose Park, Westchester, Forest Park, North Riverside, River Grove, Broadview, Berkely, Bellwood, Stone Park, Elmwood Park, Hillside, and River Forest. Maywood, Westchester, and Melrose Park had aerial units with master streams, while several engines provided water supply.
Photographers Larry Shapiro, John Tulipano, and Dan McInerney captured the event from various angles. Images show firefighters operating hand lines, using aerial ladders, and battling heavy smoke and flames. Some photos highlight the damage to the roof and the intensity of the fire as it moved across the building’s structure.
At one point, firefighters were forced to retreat due to unsafe conditions, as the fire had taken control of the roof. Contractors informed them that there were multiple propane tanks and two Bobcat skid-steer loaders inside the building, adding to the danger.
The fire was eventually contained to the original structure, and by noon, the situation was under control. Several engines and trucks remained on scene for overhaul and monitoring.
