New home for New Lenox Snorkel

From Haixusa.com: "Take a look at this fascinating story about an iconic piece of firefighting history! This particular snorkel fire truck has been a real crowd-puller no matter where it goes. Originally serving the New Lenox Fire Protection District, southwest of Chicago, for 45 years, this U.S.-made truck was a key player in their operations. In 2016, the former CEO of HAIX®, Ewald Haimerl, acquired this legendary vehicle. Its journey from the U.S. to Germany was nothing short of epic. Starting its cross-country trip in Illinois, it covered 1,200 miles all the way to the Port of Charleston, South Carolina. Given its size and relatively poor fuel efficiency—its 31-gallon engine necessitated frequent refueling stops as it navigated the challenging terrain of the Appalachian Mountains—the truck had to make multiple pit-stops. Not only did it face routine traffic checks due to its slow pace, but its sheer enormity also attracted additional scrutiny. Arriving at Charleston, the truck was shipped overseas to Bremerhaven, Germany. It spent a frustrating week in customs before embarking on its final leg—a 7-hour drive to HAIX® headquarters in Mainburg. Extensive restoration work has since ensured that this relic of firefighting past remains fully operational today. Among the many treasures in HAIX’s old-timer fleet, perhaps the most striking is a 1942 GMC pumper. Initially deployed on a U.S. airbase in northern Sweden, this vehicle served faithfully for over three decades. After a stint with a used-car dealership, HAIX® gave it a new lease on life. With its roof down, it’s become a photogenic highlight at trade shows and various HAIX® gatherings. Another gem in the fleet is a 1949 Ford TK, which joined HAIX® at the end of 2018. Prior to its current role, it functioned as a promotional vehicle for an insurance company in Georgia. Meanwhile, the Opel Blitz, built in 1965, remains the most popular ride for transporting passengers. This compact fire engine, known as the LLF, can seat up to eleven people, including the driver. Rounding out the fleet are two police vehicles classified as "Young Timers" due to their more recent production dates. One standout is a 1995 Chevrolet Impala 300 SS police car. Originally utilized by the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) as a secondary patrol unit, it later found itself in the care of the Swiss honorary consul in Zurich. Eventually, it transitioned to private ownership in Munich before finally arriving at HAIX® headquarters in Mainburg. Its presence at local events, complete with classic sirens and interior comfort, never fails to draw attention. Complementing the Chevrolet is a 1993 Harley-Davidson police motorcycle, which also made an impressive transatlantic voyage to join the collection. Both vehicles serve as living reminders of policing history. HAIX® continues to safeguard these invaluable pieces of firefighting and police heritage, ensuring their stories are preserved for future generations. They hope to expand this unique collection in the years to come!"
