Wheeling Box Alarm 8-22-11

The Wheeling Fire Department was called around 2:30 AM on August 22, 2011, to a townhouse on Fall Court in the Cedar Run development. A resident reported smoke coming from their unit. The building contained four units, two of which were unoccupied at the time. Upon arrival, Wheeling Police observed flames on the west side of the structure and reported the situation. Before the fire department could fully respond, the alarm was upgraded to a Code 4 working fire, prompting additional units from Buffalo Grove, Arlington Heights, and Long Grove to be dispatched. Engine 24 was the first fire unit to arrive and pulled into the dead-end court. Engine 23 then took a hydrant at the end of the street to supply water to Engine 24. The affected unit, which was in foreclosure, was located on the second floor with a private entrance and stairs on the west side. Firefighters initially knocked down the fire near the doorway but had to retreat when the stairway became compromised. They then used a ground ladder to access the second floor and found that the kitchen floor had been damaged, with fire still burning beneath it. As the situation escalated, the alarm was elevated to a Box Alarm due to concerns that the fire might spread along the exterior wall and into the common attic space. Additional units from Deerfield, Lincolnshire-Riverwoods, Palatine, Northbrook, and Prospect Heights responded, but they were soon released as the fire remained confined to the original unit. Larry Shapiro, a local photographer, arrived shortly after the main fire had been extinguished and captured several images of the scene. His photos show firefighters entering through a ground ladder, forcing doors in adjacent units, and cutting through an overhead garage door. One image highlights Engine 24’s position in the 'A' sector, while another shows Engine 23 connecting to a hydrant to provide water support. Another photo reveals the burned-out stairway that served as the only access to the second-floor unit. The fire reportedly started in the wall between the garage and the front entryway, causing significant structural damage. Despite the intensity of the fire, no injuries were reported, and the cause of the blaze is under investigation. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of early detection and quick response in preventing further damage.
