Barrington-Countryside Fire Protection District update

From excerpts on TheChicagoTribune.com: On its inaugural day of service on May 15th, an emergency rapid response vehicle reached Willow Creek Community Church in South Barrington within a mere 90 seconds to provide medical assistance. Prior to this vehicle being refurbished and deployed, the response time would have taken around five minutes, according to Fire Battalion Chief Scott Motisi of the Barrington-Countryside Fire Protection District. He mentioned that without this vehicle, another unit would have had to be dispatched from a fire station in Barrington Hills, which was located further away from the church. The re-equipped 2004 Ford Excursion now includes medical supplies commonly found on an engine, along with hydraulic tools and a four-gas monitor. It can effectively manage most emergencies during the initial five minutes. The district serves a population of 20,000 across parts of Barrington Hills, South Barrington, Lake Barrington, Inverness, and Fox River Grove, as well as sections of unincorporated Cook, Lake, and McHenry counties, covering a total area of 46 square miles. Authorities stated that 80% of their coverage area lacks fire hydrants. Instead, they depend on nearby retention ponds, drawing water for firefighting efforts using both fire engines and water tenders. “Not having fire hydrants is a choice made by these communities. They prefer larger lots and a more rural setting,” Roman noted. Tom Long, the board president of the Barrington-Countryside Fire Protection District, emphasized the importance of swiftly delivering fire and medical services across such a vast area. “We're constantly exploring ways to reduce response times while keeping costs manageable,” he said, adding that the vehicle operates from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday through Friday, under the South Barrington Police Department. “Most calls happen during those hours, so we analyze when and where they occur. This approach is data-driven,” Long added. The vehicle handles between eight to ten calls weekly, helping the district meet the American Heart Association's six-minute emergency response target for cardiac patients. Fire Chief Jeffrey Swanson mentioned plans for a third station. “This vehicle will support our preparations for opening it. No specific site or location has been decided yet,” he said. Currently, the refurbished Ford Excursion, complete with medical and emergency equipment, is valued at $47,500. A brand-new, fully equipped Excursion would cost the district approximately $113,000, according to Swanson. The enhanced capabilities of this vehicle represent a significant investment in public safety infrastructure, allowing quicker responses in emergencies and ensuring compliance with national standards for critical care delivery.
