Barrington-Countryside Fire Protection District update

From excerpts sourced from TheChicagoTribune.com: On its inaugural day of service on May 15th, the emergency rapid response vehicle reached Willow Creek Community Church in South Barrington within just 90 seconds to provide medical assistance to a patient. Prior to this vehicle being refurbished and brought into action, the response time would have been approximately five minutes, as explained by Fire Battalion Chief Scott Motisi from the Barrington-Countryside Fire Protection District. He noted that without this vehicle, another unit would have been dispatched from a fire station in Barrington Hills, which was further away from the church. The revamped 2004 Ford Excursion now includes medical supplies commonly found on firefighting engines. It also carries hydraulic tools and a four-gas detector. Chief Motisi stated that it can manage nearly any emergency situation during the first critical five minutes. Serving a population of 20,000 across parts of Barrington Hills, South Barrington, Lake Barrington, Inverness, and Fox River Grove, along with sections of unincorporated Cook, Lake, and McHenry counties, the district covers a total area of 46 square miles. Approximately 80% of its coverage lacks fire hydrants, relying instead on nearby retention ponds for drafting water, alongside water tenders. According to Roman, the lack of hydrants is intentional, chosen by these communities due to their preference for a more rural setting, despite the larger lot sizes. Tom Long, the board president of the Barrington-Countryside Fire Protection District, emphasized the importance of swiftly reaching their expansive coverage area with both fire and medical services. "We're always exploring ways to reduce response times while staying within reasonable financial constraints," he remarked. The vehicle operates from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday through Friday, under the management of the South Barrington Police Department. Long mentioned that most calls come during these hours, making it possible to analyze patterns and optimize deployment. On average, the vehicle handles between eight to ten calls per week, aiding the district in meeting the six-minute emergency response benchmark for cardiac patients, as recommended by the American Heart Association. Fire Chief Jeffrey Swanson disclosed plans for a third station. "This vehicle will play a crucial role in preparing us to open it. No specific location or plot of land has been selected yet," he added. Currently, the Ford Excursion, valued at $47,500 including medical and emergency equipment, is operational. However, a brand-new, fully-equipped Excursion would cost the district approximately $113,000, according to Swanson. In light of these developments, the district continues to evaluate various strategies to enhance both efficiency and safety for the communities it serves.
