CFD LODD anniversary – Firefighter Ed Coglianese

**From DNAinfo.com:** On the very day the Chicago Bears clinched their first-ever Super Bowl victory, Chicago suffered another kind of loss—one that hit close to home for many. That day, January 26, 1986, the city mourned the death of Chicago Fire Lieutenant Edmond Coglianese, a 42-year-old from Mount Greenwood. Coglianese, a 12-year veteran of the department, lost his life while heroically saving two elderly residents trapped on the third floor of the Mark Twain Hotel at 111 W. Division Street. According to reports from the *Chicago Tribune*, he initially managed to rescue them but then returned inside the burning five-story structure to continue searching for additional survivors. Tragically, he became trapped by the rapidly spreading flames and succumbed to smoke inhalation. In total, 35 senior citizens were safely evacuated from the hotel using fire department ladders, while another 100 people escaped via stairways. The incident remains a poignant reminder of the courage and sacrifice demanded of firefighters every day. A bell-ringing ceremony was held exactly 30 years later, on January 26, 2016, at Engine Company 98—the firehouse where Coglianese served. The somber event honored his memory and the countless lives he touched throughout his career. Coglianese left behind his wife, Eileen, and their two children, Allyson and Matt. Eileen Coglianese, now president of the Gold Badge Society, knows firsthand the unimaginable grief faced by families when a loved one in uniform is lost in the line of duty. The society’s mission is to provide support during these devastating times—whether it’s accompanying families to the hospital, helping with funeral arrangements, fielding media inquiries, or addressing the myriad other challenges that arise afterward. For those who knew him, Coglianese was more than just a firefighter; he was a devoted husband, father, and friend whose legacy continues to inspire. As the photos from the ceremony show, his impact on the community runs deep. *Thanks, Dan.* --- **Visuals:** Several images from the bell-ringing ceremony depict Engine Company 98, capturing the solemn atmosphere as colleagues and loved ones paid tribute to Coglianese’s service. Each photograph, taken by Tim Olk, highlights the reverence with which his memory was honored.
