Commercial garage fire in Wheeling 1-12-12

Shortly before 4:00 AM on Thursday, the Wheeling Police Department received a 9-1-1 call from a homeowner reporting that their garage was on fire. Fire units from Wheeling were quickly dispatched and arrived at the scene around 4:00 AM. Upon arrival, they were informed by a patrol officer that the detached garage was fully engulfed in flames. As the first responders approached, the alarm was upgraded to a working fire (Code 4), which triggered additional resources including a tower ladder from Buffalo Grove, an ambulance from Long Grove, and an engine from Arlington Heights. At 4:07 AM, the first arriving unit found a large 16x50-foot garage used for a commercial landscape business that was already well involved in fire. Command was immediately alerted about the presence of large storage drums, propane tanks, and an acetylene tank near or inside the structure, adding significant risk to the situation. Firefighters worked aggressively to contain the blaze using four lines, managing to prevent it from spreading further. The fire ultimately destroyed the garage, a skid-steer loader inside, and at least one vehicle parked outside. A damaged acetylene torch head allowed gas to burn freely, contributing to the intensity of the flames. Inside, the building was filled with small machines and tools typical of a landscape business. Larry Shapiro, a local photographer, captured several images of the incident, showing firefighters in action, lines being stretched, and the intense heat consuming the structure. A gallery of more photos is available here, and a video from the scene will be posted later today.
