The color of fire trucks (part 6)

Jeff Rudolph is keeping us honest and ensuring our historical records are accurate. Recently, he shared some important feedback reminding us of fire departments that had non-red units not mentioned in our previous posts about MABAS Division 3 and MABAS Division 4. **MABAS Division 4 Additions:** One notable addition is the Abbott Labs Fire Department in North Chicago, which operated a 1978 Darley foam pumper on a Ford C-8000 chassis. The unit carried 500 gallons of water, 20 gallons of foam, and featured a 750-GPM pump. This vehicle was part of a fleet that previously included two lime green engines and a van. Bill Friedrich captured this image. Another highlight is the Bonnie Brook Fire Protection District’s tanker, built by Boyer on a Ford L8000 chassis. This unit was later used by the Beach Park Fire Department, which had a brush truck, this tanker, an engine, a squad, and a van—all painted in lime green before switching to red. Larry Shapiro took this photo. The Greater Round Lake Fire Protection District also had a unique setup. In addition to two white CF Mack engines, they operated a Spartan/FMC Roughneck engine with a CFC cab. Jeff Rudolph provided this shot, showcasing the distinct design of the unit. **MABAS Division 3 Additions:** Evanston Fire Department had two yellow International/Hendrickson Howe engines from 1974, labeled Engine 23 and 24. Each was equipped with a 1,000-GPM pump and a 300-gallon tank. These units were later repainted red. The photographer remains unknown, but the images are part of Jeff Rudolph's collection. Highwood Fire Department utilized a retired American LaFrance engine from Northbrook as a reserve unit. Originally known as Engine 60 in Northbrook, it was later modified and used by Highwood. This 1969 model featured a 1,000-GPM pump and a 500-gallon tank. Jeff Rudolph captured this vehicle. Winnetka Fire Department acquired a small 'DOT' rescue unit from Pierce in 1981. Purchased with federal funding, it was painted lime green to meet Department of Transportation specifications. Later, it was repainted red and white. This unit, shown here on a Chevy chassis, was another example of how color schemes evolved over time. These additions help paint a more complete picture of the history and evolution of these fire departments, thanks to Jeff Rudolph's valuable contributions.
