Three perish in East St Louis House fire, 1-3-16

**Excerpts from the BellevilleNewsDemocrat.com:** In a tragic house fire that occurred on Sunday, three lives were lost in the 2000 block of North 43rd Street. The fire broke out in a modest one-story home located at 2016 N. 23rd Street. Reports indicate that there were six individuals inside the residence when the flames erupted. Unfortunately, only three managed to escape, while three others—Kendra Williams, a 27-year-old expectant mother; her four-year-old son, Jayden Harris; and Chantez Reynolds, Kendra's 32-year-old fiancé—were unable to make it out alive. East St. Louis Fire Chief James Blackmon confirmed the identities of those who perished. He expressed deep sorrow over the loss of life, particularly highlighting the devastating impact on the family left behind. Corey Burries, the homeowner, recounted her harrowing experience during the incident. "I was sleeping when my grandson started screaming 'fire.' By the time I opened my bedroom door, the smoke was overwhelming," she said, visibly shaken. "I managed to throw my grandson out of the window and called my daughter and her fiancé, instructing them to use the fire escape outside my room. They didn't respond." Burries added that her efforts were met with immense difficulty due to the thick smoke engulfing the house. Family members described a desperate scene as they attempted to rescue their loved ones. One relative had to be physically held back as he tried to rush into the inferno. Neighbors also bravely attempted to enter the home but were forced to retreat due to the intensity of the smoke. East St. Louis Assistant Fire Chief Todd Hill detailed the timeline of events. The emergency call came in at 1:42 p.m., and within minutes, firefighters from Engine House 422 arrived on the scene. Hill recalled the severity of the situation: "The house was fully engulfed in flames when we arrived. It was clear that people were trapped inside." Despite the crew's valiant efforts, the fire proved too fierce, and tragically, three lives were lost inside a bedroom. Hill, with decades of firefighting experience, acknowledged the bravery of his team. "Our firefighters always give everything they have to save lives, and they did an incredible job under these circumstances," he said. However, the extent of the damage made survival impossible for those still inside. An investigator from the Illinois State Fire Marshal's office is currently on site to determine the cause of the blaze. Family members shared their heartbreak over the loss of Kendra Williams, who was five months pregnant. Her sister, Janice Williams, tearfully described Kendra as someone who excelled in technology, especially with computers and phones. The family now faces the daunting challenge of finding shelter, as they are currently homeless. Additionally, they urgently require assistance covering funeral expenses. This tragedy has deeply affected the community, prompting calls for support and aid to help the surviving family members navigate this difficult period.

    Copper Wire Mesh

Copper wire mesh is a type of material that consists of copper wires woven together to form a mesh structure. It is available in various forms such as woven, knitted or braided, and can be found in different sizes and thicknesses.

The properties of copper wire mesh include high electrical conductivity, good thermal conductivity, corrosion resistance, and malleability. These characteristics make it suitable for various applications:

    1. **Electrical Applications**: Copper is an excellent conductor of electricity. Therefore, copper wire mesh is often used in electrical wiring, transformer cores, and as a part of electrical components due to its ability to conduct electric current efficiently.

    2. **Heat Exchangers**: The high thermal conductivity of copper wire mesh makes it useful in heat exchangers where it can help transfer heat from one medium to another.

    3. **Filtering**: Copper wire mesh can be used as a filter in various industries, such as in the food industry to filter out impurities from liquids or in water treatment plants to remove particulate matter.

    4. **Industrial Coatings**: Copper wire mesh is sometimes used in industrial coatings for its anti-corrosive properties.

    5. **Architectural Applications**: In modern architecture, copper wire mesh can be used for decorative purposes, offering both aesthetic appeal and functional benefits like sun shading or acoustic management.

    6. **Art and Craft**: Due to its malleability and aesthetic qualities, copper wire mesh is also used in artistic creations and crafts.

When selecting copper wire mesh, factors like the gauge (thickness), weave pattern, and the specific application should be considered to ensure the right product is chosen.
