Wet-Down for new squad in Deerfield

On a chilly Monday in January 2016, the Deerfield-Bannockburn Fire Protection District held a special event to officially introduce their brand-new Squad 19 to the community. Despite the biting cold that made working outdoors quite challenging, the team managed to pull off a meaningful ceremony indoors. Once the firefighters and officers guided the shiny new rig into the station, several members of the group got creative with a hose line inside the building to simulate the traditional wet-down process. The day wasn’t just about welcoming a new vehicle; it was also a touching tribute to Deerfield-Bannockburn FF/PM Brad Hytoff, who had left a lasting impact on the department. His family attended the event, and his parents played a significant role in honoring his memory by placing a commemorative plaque on the driver's side door of the new engine. As the ceremony continued, images captured by Larry Shapiro showcased the deep emotions shared during this heartfelt dedication. One picture showed the proud parents carefully attaching the plaque, while another depicted them symbolically hosing down the new fire engine—a gesture symbolizing both renewal and remembrance. The Pierce Dash CF PUC model stood tall and gleaming under the careful attention of those who had gathered to celebrate its arrival. In addition to these poignant moments, there were other highlights from the day. A video recorded the entire event, capturing the camaraderie and pride among the firefighters as they celebrated not only their new asset but also the legacy of one of their own. More photographs from the day can be found on shapirophotography.net, offering a deeper glimpse into the heartfelt dedication and the unwavering spirit of the Deerfield-Bannockburn Fire Protection District. This event wasn’t just a milestone for the fire district—it was a testament to the bonds forged within the ranks and the enduring memory of those who have served so bravely. It was a reminder of how far the department has come and the strength of the foundation laid by those who came before.
