Wet-Down for new squad in Deerfield

On a chilly Monday in January 2016, the Deerfield-Bannockburn Fire Protection District held a special event to welcome their newly acquired Squad 19 into service. Despite the inclement weather with frigid temperatures making it difficult to use water outdoors, the team managed to pull off a meaningful ceremony. When the firefighters and officers maneuvered the shiny new rig into the station, some gathered members decided to conduct a mock wet-down indoors using a hardline instead. The day was more than just about introducing a new vehicle; it was also a touching tribute to former firefighter and paramedic Brad Hytoff. His family joined the celebration, and his parents personally placed a commemorative plaque on the driver's side door of the vehicle, marking the occasion with deep sentiment. Watching them adorn the plaque was a poignant moment that left many emotional. Photographer Larry Shapiro captured these heartfelt moments beautifully, providing us with a visual narrative of the day. His images show not only the technical aspects of the event but also the camaraderie and pride within the fire district. The dedication of the new engine to Brad Hytoff’s memory was further highlighted as his family participated in a symbolic hose-down of the truck. As the ceremony unfolded, there was a palpable sense of unity among the firefighters and their families. The Pierce Dash CF PUC, the new addition to the fleet, stood out against the backdrop of the station, gleaming under the winter sun. The dedication was a testament to the bond between the firefighters and their community, honoring a beloved colleague who left an indelible mark on everyone. It was truly a memorable day filled with both joy and remembrance, showcasing the strength of human connection and the resilience of a tight-knit firefighting family.
