Rising costs of traditional energy sources, increasing consumption, and escalating pollution have long been a cause of concern for people. This is why consumers have adopted CNG after petrol and diesel, despite not experiencing the convenience and efficiency they had anticipated. However, with time, advancements in technology have paved the way for solar energy to gain prominence. People are now using solar energy not only for transportation but also within their homes. The government has initiated various projects to increase awareness about solar energy. As technology advances, the automotive sector in India has embraced solar energy, and electric vehicle charging stations are being established across the country. The expansion of these eco-friendly charging stations will not only provide convenience to users but also create significant employment opportunities. This growth in charging infrastructure is steering us towards a brighter future.
When it comes to solar energy projects, the government has made the process of installing charging stations quite straightforward, keeping in mind public convenience and environmental awareness. Plans are underway to make eco-friendly charging stations available at major roads, parking lots, malls, petrol pumps, and other locations. In this regard, the Indian government has issued guidelines that allow any individual or organization to install charging stations for public use.
A few years ago, the government launched the National Electric Mobility Mission, aiming to have six million electric vehicles on Indian roads by 2020, with a further goal of achieving 30% electric mobility by 2030. Experts estimate that this automotive mission plan could create 65 million jobs by 2026. With these promising prospects in mind, plans are being made to construct eco-friendly charging station hubs in cities like Delhi, Noida, Gurugram, Ghaziabad, Pune, Amaravati, Chennai, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad.
Major companies involved in building charging stations include EESL, which is working to raise awareness about electric vehicles and has set a target to introduce 10,000 electric vehicles through government ministries and departments. So far, EESL has successfully installed 350 charging stations. Other organizations like Delhi Transco Limited, Punjab State Power Corporation Limited, Uttarakhand Power Corporation Limited, Gujarat Energy Development Agency, and BSES are also contributing to the development of electric vehicle charging infrastructure. According to government guidelines, no license is required to install an eco-friendly charging station. Charging points will even be set up in rural areas, and it’s mandated that there should be a public charging station every 25 kilometers on highways in both directions. These companies will also be responsible for maintaining these charging stations for three years. It’s estimated that the cost of setting up one charging station will be around 400,000 rupees, with a separate power supply plan. The government will provide a subsidy of 10.5 billion rupees for setting up these charging stations, which will be jointly managed by NTPC and the Power Grid Corporation.
The benefits of electric vehicles are becoming increasingly appealing to consumers, primarily due to their environmental safety and cost-effectiveness. Some key advantages of electric vehicles include:
- Electric vehicles are significantly cheaper to operate than petrol or diesel vehicles. For instance, the cost of charging an electric vehicle is roughly one-third less than the cost of running a gasoline-powered vehicle per kilometer.
- Electric vehicles require less maintenance and servicing, and their parts like batteries, motors, and radiators are relatively inexpensive.
- Electric vehicles produce zero harmful emissions, ensuring environmental protection.
- Charging stations powered by solar energy can reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
- Electric vehicles can be charged using solar power instead of relying solely on grid electricity.
- Electric vehicles are lighter and offer better mileage compared to petrol or CNG vehicles.
