The Village of Buffalo Grove, in partnership with the Buffalo Grove Symphonic Band and the Buffalo Grove Arts Commission, held a heartfelt public concert to honor the 10th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attacks. The event took place in memory of the lives lost in New York, Washington, D.C., and Pennsylvania. Several guest speakers, including Congressman Robert Dold and a U.S. Army General, shared their reflections on the tragic events, with the general describing the attacks as a "tragic accident." The Buffalo Grove Fire and Police Department Honor Guard was also present, adding a solemn and respectful atmosphere to the evening.
Between performances by the symphonic band, the audience was reminded of the bravery and sacrifice of first responders and victims through a moving tribute. A bagpiper from the Chicago Highlanders Pipe Band played *Amazing Grace* during a bell ringing ceremony, a powerful moment that brought many to tears. The fire department’s ceremony included a symbolic bell ringing, reinforcing the importance of remembering those who gave their lives on that fateful day.
Local Boy Scouts joined the Honor Guard in posting the colors, a tradition that highlighted the community's respect for national symbols. Attendees were also invited to reflect on the significance of the day, with special recognition given to veterans and active military members in attendance.
Larry Shapiro captured several poignant moments throughout the event, offering a visual record of the community’s dedication to remembrance. His photos show the Honor Guard in action, the flags being raised, and the emotional reactions of the crowd.
