The Chicago Tribune reported on a 2-11 alarm fire that broke out this morning, involving a Chinese restaurant on the city’s West Side. The blaze quickly spread to two adjacent storefronts with second-floor apartments, prompting nearly 100 firefighters to respond.
According to the Chicago Fire Department, no injuries were reported in the incident, which appeared to have started in a one-story restaurant located near the intersection of Cicero Avenue and Harrison Street in the West Garfield Park neighborhood. Fire officials confirmed that the fire was fueled by tar on the roof of the building.
The fire began around 3 a.m. and spread rapidly, even as rain fell throughout the night. Despite the challenging weather conditions, firefighters managed to bring the flames under control by approximately 5:45 a.m. Fire Department spokesman Richard Rosado noted that the fire moved from the restaurant to the buildings on either side, highlighting the intensity of the situation.
Gordon J. Nord, Jr., a local photographer, was on the scene and captured several powerful images of the event. His photos show firefighters working tirelessly to contain the blaze, with tower ladders and aerial units engaged in the effort.
One image shows heavy smoke pouring from the restaurant as Tower Ladder 14 attacks the fire from above. Another captures Squad 2A setting up in front of the building on Cermak Road. Additional shots reveal firefighters using hand lines in the street while the tower ladder and squad work together from above.
Another photo features firefighters from Squad 2 operating in the basket of a Snorkel, while another highlights the intense fire pushing from the roof. A final image shows thick smoke and flames venting through the roof, with two aerial units actively fighting the blaze.
